Beam modification: a desirable modification of the spatial distribution of radiation by insertion of any material in the beam path.

There are four main types of beam modifiers:
1. Wedge filter (external, internal)
2. Shielding (custom blocks, multileaf collimators)
3. Compensator
4. Bolus
